Smithville Elementary

April Edition

April is here, and we have a busy and exciting month ahead at Smithville Elementary! As we begin winding down the school year, this time always seems to become a whirlwind of learning, celebrations, and special events. Our students and staff have worked incredibly hard, and we are looking forward to finishing the year strong.

This month, STAAR testing will take place at the elementary campus. Please note that SES will be a closed campus on testing days, which means no visitors will be allowed on campus. STAAR testing dates are April 14 for Reading (3rd–5th grades), April 21 for Science (5th grade), and April 23 for Math (3rd–5th grades). We appreciate your support in helping our students arrive on time, well rested, and ready to do their best.

We also have many wonderful celebrations happening throughout April. On April 1, we will celebrate our amazing Paraprofessionals and all they do each day to support our students and staff. On April 2, we will hold our Growth Parade to recognize and celebrate student growth during the 3rd nine weeks. The week of April 6, we will proudly celebrate Mrs. O’Rourke during Assistant Principal Week for her dedication and leadership at SES. Then on April 22, we will celebrate our outstanding front office staff and thank them for their daily commitment to our students, families, and campus.

April is sure to be full of meaningful moments, important accomplishments, and lots to celebrate. Thank you for your continued support as we partner together to make Smithville Elementary a great place for students to learn and grow.

Ms. Brockman, Principal

Arrival and Dismissal Reminders

🚗 Arrival & Dismissal Reminders

As we move into a busy spring season, we ask for everyone’s help in keeping our arrival and dismissal procedures safe and efficient for all students.

Please remember:

*Patience and alertness are key. Our traffic lines move quickly when everyone follows procedures.

*Cell phone use is not permitted while driving through the drop-off and pick-up lanes. Staying focused helps keep all students safe.

*If Ms. Brockman is standing in your lane, it is not your turn to go. Please wait for direction before moving forward.

*We have two lanes of traffic—please do not cross traffic unless it is your lane’s designated turn to move.

*Traffic should only cross at the designated crosswalk.

*When dropping off or picking up, please pull all the way forward to help us keep the line moving efficiently.

Our goal is to unload up to 6 cars at a time at each drop-off/pick-up area (1st–2nd grade side and 3rd–4th grade side).

Your cooperation makes a huge difference in keeping our students safe and ensuring a smooth process for everyone. Thank you for partnering with us!

📚 Family Reading Challenge📚

📚 Family Reading Challenge

At Smithville Elementary, we believe that reading is a journey best taken together! This month, we are excited to encourage families to join us in a Family Reading Challenge.

We invite all students and their families to spend time reading together each day. Whether it’s a bedtime story, taking turns reading pages, or discussing a favorite book, these moments build strong readers and even stronger connections.

Here’s the challenge:

*Read together for at least 20 minutes a day

*Talk about what you read—favorite parts, characters, or new learning

*Make it fun—read in a cozy spot, use silly voices, or let your child be the “teacher”

Families who participate can help their child track their reading throughout the month. Students will earn Tiger Tokens when they turn in their Reading Log each week! Challenge ends on April 30, 2026

Reading together not only strengthens literacy skills, but it also creates meaningful memories that last a lifetime. Thank you for partnering with us to grow a love of reading at home!
